A lot of people seem to think that AJAX is just snazzy javascript like mootools and lightbox.
It's not, it's a special way of retrieving information from a server without reloading the page.
Just wanted to clear that up!

Ajax is used quite a bit for Joomla! modules. As an avid user of the Joomla! cms I see and use quite a few of them. It does indeed prove usefull for updating certain stats (ie users online) without the need for refreshing the entire page. A great alternative to frames in that sense, I think personally.
