trouble getting website to open at my host.

Posted November 17th, 2008 at 12:32 AM by rastoddard
Hello Help,
About 13 years ago I designed a web site (www.aiscoinc.com) using netscape. Shortly thereafter I retired. Now I am back and have redesigned the web site using Microsoft Publisher 2002. Everything works fine in the preview stage. However, when I upload to our host (Vario) the index page has an instreuction to look in a file for the rest of the site. Customer service at Vario tells me to tell the index page not to look in the file. All images and pages have been uploaded but, the index does not know how to find them. And, I don’t know how to tell it. Can anyone help? PLEASE. I do pretty good on the computer for an old guy, but this is driving me over the edge. I have downloaded a trial of Microsoft Expression Web and have managed to copy and paste the publisher pages over to MEW. I am stumped as what to do next. I have the Dummie book, but I am a slow learner of print, but, a quick study with hands on. Bob

microsoft publisher is quite possibly the worst program to use to design websites, sorry but it is true. It sounds like you may have some html knowledge but not much? sorry if i am wrong. The reason why the code looks so daunting in mew is because publisher renders html code and chucks in a little bit of junk for good measure, why?? i dont know but i know that this can create internal problems with navigation and also page display in newer browsers. Unless you are going to be redesigning or creating other sites frequently i really wouldnt bother learning to use a new program like dreamweaver etc. My best advice would be to find a free template which matches your site and incorporate your site into that or just start over, leaving publisher out of the equation, its not as daunting as it sounds i promise! by looking at the site link you have posted i can see it is a pretty basic design and with no major formatting either. the html you will need will be the site structure, your text and images and links, you will also need to insert some css to style these objects. some reference pages you may want to check out with working examples can be found at http://www.w3schools.com.

Good luck and please feel free to pm me with any questions you may have
