Creative Labs threaten developer over home made drivers....
Posted April 1st, 2008 at 05:57 AM by Rob
I was reading the register this morning and came across this:-
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/03..._legal_action/
Daniel_k has created a number of drivers which make Creative's soundcards work smoothly on PCs running Windows Vista. He had posted a link to them on a forum on Creative's website and many users had downloaded them.
Without his drivers, users say, Creative's soundcards cause Vista machines to crash or features to fail.
This is despite the fact that Creative markets its sound cards as "Vista-compatible".
I cannot believe that someone who in his own free time improved the effectiveness and compatibility of their products could be treated so badly by them. Like the article says, they should have offered him a job.
I bet Creative Labs are regretting their awful decision on the right way to handle this matter. More alarming is the decision by the 'corporate communications' vice president to delete all this guys posts from their forum - a forum where he is being praised by loads of users who have a better experience with the soundcards because of his home brewed drivers. If that is brain-child of the corporate communications department then I would seriously be looking at sacking them off and getting a new vp directly from Mcdonalds who could teach them a lesson or two.
I do believe they have shot themselves not just in the foot, but also in their wallet.
Disgraceful.

Why would a company treat someone who helped improve their soundcards to make them more Vista-compatiable?
I agree with ya, its completely disgraceful. They probably couldn't take the fact that they did not make those drivers. Everyone would WELCOME the improvement. Quote:

You know what? I bet this is down to the lawsuit factor - line 409865 of those ridiculous terms and conditions and protection of assets.

They should have a "Problem with our software? give us a suggestion!" page. Those idiots. |

It would appear they have climbed down over the threat:
