FACEBOOK!.... Yawn, Yawn - Can I have my life back please?

Facebook!!

It's almost becoming like a swearword to me!

I detest Facebook with a passion and the only thing stopping me from deleting my account is that forgotton friends may be able to find me there one day if it still exists.

I am sick and tired of all the ridiculous and draining friend updates, invites and putting it bluntly jaw dropping BORINGNESS.

We've all been there - set up a facebook account, become addicted and then it wears off.

You then sit back and analyse what facebook really is.

It's flooded with Ads, full of time-stealing applications and bombards you with rubbish. Then there is the rather disturbing competitivness over friendships - the 'my contact list is bigger than yours' and 'I've got more friends - I'm more popular and somehow better than you' attitudes. Very disturbing stuff.

I dont have a problem with companies profiting from personal relationships.... telephone companies and dating agencies have been doing that for years - it's just the all encompasing, swallow up every bit of info in sight type mentality that facebook represents - It's that I disagree with.... and very strongly.

This is taken from Facebook's terms:-
"Facebook may also collect information about you from other sources, such as newspapers, blogs, instant messaging services, and other users of the Facebook service through the operation of the service (eg, photo tags) in order to provide you with more useful information and a more personalised experience."

Roughly translated, they are trying to gather up as much info as they can, to sell for as much as they, and to make ads appeal to you more. This kind of power is dangerous for a site who's total userbase is approaching the size of the UK population.

Whenever you read the word 'facebook', you should substitute the words 'big brother', because thats exactly what they are aiming for, and exactly what they have.

Facebook's growth is slowing and more and more people are deleting their accounts - perhaps they have finally come to realise what I'm sure everyone must in the end - I want my life back, my privacy, my 'peace and quiet' and perhaps my sanity??

Strip away all the useless crap from facebook and you are left with a very very powerful framework atop which applications can communicate with each other. Bearing this in mind, I forcast that it will over time become more of a social business network as opposed to a social network for the common man. It's framework will connect businesses and services together mostly for the corporate world. I might be wrong, but something will have to change and this is the only direction I can see it surviving in, and perhaps thriving in long term.

Facebook claims to connect people and whilst it's true in once sense, in another it's far removed. Why would I want to connect with friends via facebook and waste hours upon hours of trawling through a plethora of meaningless crap when I can use more 'niche' sites (like webforumz) or services such as MSN. These REALLY connect people and what's more they do not kill every ounce of productivity in the process.

Facebook has zapped many of my hours in the past, and because of facebook I felt inclined to write this blog post (yet more time lost).

Thanks facebook.... thanks for nothing.

I agree with you completely rob facebook is the most annoying website on the internet by far! Who the hell cares that Joe Bloggs joined this group and someone u barely know has became a fan of Kanye West!!!!! Also, these stupid applications and invitations do my head in! The only thing i like about facebook is that it looks nice and clean compared to myspace as some people have horrible horrible layouts. Hey Rob, maybe one day you could start your own network website the way you want it to be :-)

At least myspace is mainly centered around music - it has a kind of niche. It's still bad, bbut not on the same level.

I agree. Myspace all the way. If you wanna waste time then do it listening to new bands and looking at the work of artists rather than buying someone you dont know a frog, yes you can infact buy a cyber frog. What someone will do with a cyber frog, I have no idea, perhaps as much as they will do with a cyber drink or cyber muffin. It annoys me for many reasons but mainly the middle class twee'ness, there's nothing raw and real about it, its the personification of people with safe little lives who dont have any real worries or problems or any kind of 'filled' life so instead they buy their friends a cyber haircut, or something else equally useless. I agree with Danny, I dont care if someone who asked to add me is now a fan of some rubbish band, I dont even care if my best friend is now a fan of a rubbish band or has added 'what kind of cyber frog am I?'. Nonsense.

It wont be long before people are saying, can you remember when idiots were lining the pockets of ad merchants by buying people they dont know things they cant ever have or use? and adding applications that promise to tell you what kind of twonk you are, but will only tell you precisley what kind of twonk you are, AFTER you have annoyed all the friends you dont know with emails asking them if they would like to know what kind of twonk they are........

It was insidious from the start, then slowly slowly catchy twonky the ads started, then the stupid applications became even more stupid and the whole 'social network' became nothing more that a commercial pry into your private life and an extensive data collection service to find out what paper you read or what shop you buy your milk from.....while you were busy looking the other way (usually at someone from works' funny looking girlfriend in their holiday pics) you were being personally ransacked for your personal information and preferences and while all of this is going on, your boss was looking at the photo's you posted of the great night out before you called in sick...

It is infact genius. Its us who are the thickies for perpetuating the nonsense. Right Im off to see if the egg someone I dont know sent me has hatched, Im hoping it will hatch into a cyber frog, I'll name him Twonk.

Actually I had the experience you had with facebook with myspace.
The only reason I use it now is to get in touch with people I don't have on MSN.

Now, I don't have as much of a problem with Facebook, as I don't overdo my time on it. I check my messages, talk with friends, etc, and get right off. It's handy for actually communincating with friends, but not a whole lot else. So I don't have a problem with Facebook as much as MySpace where I am constantly bombarded by messsages from people I don't know, can't browse from eye burning layouts, etc...

I signed up for a facebook account about a month ago, intending to blog my struggles to go self-employed. Couldn't be assed. But I've had many friend requests from exotic sounding females - the first one turned out to be a sales ploy to get me to join some dating site. I'm sure the others were genuine, although I never bothered to check them out...

Wish face book would get a competitor, then they'd have to improve it.
