Smoking Ban:: Increases health problems??

Ok, I am a smoker and I go outside to smoke... even in my own house. I know it's a bad habit and I've heard all the lectures thank you very much.

The UK has had a total ban on smoking in public places such as pubs/restaurants, etc. I was outside a restaurant last night 'freezing' my arse off and found myself rushing my cigarette so i could get back in the warm...

I was taking more drags, inhaling more and just generally rushing it so I could finish and get back in the warm. Rushing it to the extent that I was finished my ciggy in just 2 minutes.

I was thinking, that surely I am not the only one that does this. When it's cold, and I am outside I actually smoke more because I rush them to get back in the warm. I smoke more when you account that more 'smoke' went through me than if I had of had a ciggy in warm and comfort.

Smoking more = bad health right?

I am sure that smoking less physical cigarettes due to having to go outside would
be outdone by the way in which people smoke them once they get out there.

You just watch this winter - I'm sure there has to be an element of truth in my mad reasoning.

I will be totally honest with your here and say that I wish smoking was against the law!

I hate stepping outside and have that wave of smoke come at me, I hate waiting for the bus and have the smoke from the guy standing next to me fill my nose, I hate going to other peoples' house and inhaling that crap. I hate it all!

I am a non-smoker because I can't stand the stench of it and I don't want my lungs to turn black. Unfortunately, I have to inhale second-hand smoke which is just as bad.

It baffles me what extent smokers will go to have a cigarette. What is it about cigarettes that makes sane people put poison in their bodies? Is it the idea that we all feel invincible?

I see nothing worthwhile with continuing to smoke.

Hi Rob,
This is a good example of the power of the internet. I have a google alert for anything containing 'smoking ban' and your blog flashed up this morning. Have you considered nasal snuff, it's 99% safer than smoking (that's official) as you don't light it and you can do it inside in the warmth. I won't abuse your blog by advertising our products here, as I do not consider that appropiate. But do look us up, we could save your life!

For some reason I've found more and more people smoking since the ban
As though it were taboo and it's a must do now.
Very strange.

I smoked for 30 years and then stopped this past January. And if I am alive at 70, I am going to start up again. I have heard all the complaints about smokers and second hand smoke and then I look around and ask, "What about all the other crap we breath in?"

And if you are going to ban cigarettes, you have to be fair and ban, alcohol also. Smoke bothers you, drinking bothers me....
When I was a smoker and someone asked me to stop because it was bothering them, I did.....But what would happen if I walked up to a person in
a bar and asked them to stop drinking because it bothered me. Would they stop... I doubt it, because alcohol does not carry the same stigma that smoking does. Just venting......

The US has been ahead in smoking bans for a while... No smoking in any public place! Only outside. It's even illegal to smoke while you are driving (which is not as enforced).
In Germany they recently did this, too. New laws to kick smokers out the door...
Seems to be a EU thing, or a UN thing, or whatever it is these days.

Hmmm, well must just be where you live. Cause around here, everyone smokes. Public places, perhaps not. but most restaurants have a smoking section as well.

I'm personally gratefull for the ban. I hated going for a drink at the weekend, and coming home smelling like I'd been sleeping next to a bin fire all night.

But I dont care if other people smoke, thats up to them. I guess they could be putting far worse things into their bodys.

Just a random thought, but can't being outside be considered a "public place" too? lol.

I'm kinda mixed on this. I don't think that smoking should be banned inside public places, but if you're going to have it, it should be a entirely different room, with complete walls and doors separating it from non-smoking. Unless of course you're at a place for little children or animals, then yes, it should be banned. They have no control over where they are, adults do.

And honestly, I live in NY, Ive never heard of people getting a ticket for smoking in their vehicles, didn't even hear of it ever being a law, or at least something nation-wide enforced. There's also a rumor going around that smoking is going to be banned on state-run college campuses. And seeing as I live in a place with 2 colleges across the street from each other....that could cause a riot.

OK, I see there's a lot of argument here. I live in Ithaca, New York. In this particular city, there are such laws (smoking in public places, while driving, etc...), and I did not know that it varies from state to state and even from city to city. My previous post was more toward where I live. I have not done extensive research on this, so I was not aware that it is not a nationwide thing. About the smoking while driving, I have seen people get pulled over by a cop, and given a ticket because they were smoking and throwing their ashes on other people's windshields. Same thing with talking on cell phones. But like I said, it is not that enforced, so many people probably get away with it...

Of course you can, you choose not to quit! I know so many people that find the strength once they are diagnosed with cancer. Go see your health care provider and ask for assistance.

Where I live you cannot smoke in bars, restaurants or public places. It's the best! We can go out as a family and not be subjected to second hand smoke. We have legislation pending (not sure if it will pass) that will ban smoking in vehicles that have children present. The point of this law is to reduce illness which in turn reduces health care costs.

What really used to wind me up when going out somewhere to eat was, when another group at a different table finished their meal, some of them sparked up a ciggy even though other people at other tables were eating. I find that really rude as I don't wish for my food to taste of cigarette smoke.

I am a non-smoker and have never smoked and never will. half the reason i stopped going out to the pub was that i couldn't breathe and the next day i could feel the effects of breathing all that crappy smoke in. Maybe now i might go out again and have a drink or something to eat without my lungs filling up with someone else's cast offs.

I suppose the government sees it as, if you want to go outside and have a ciggy, that's up to you....no-one is forcing you like smokers force non-smokers to breathe the fag smoke

i smoke, don't mind about the ban really. Couldn't smoke many places anyways. Worse thing is that clubs smell worse, instead of alcohol and smoke, it now stinks of alcohol and sweat. Sexiest thing ever eh?? hmm

and if your really into cancer and bad health da di da. Look up about lead in the atmosphere. And chemicals used in old refridgerators. That is wrong. Yea smoking kill's usually the person who is doing it. But were subjected to much more by large pollutant companies. And where is there ban or punishment?
