The Web 2.1 for Idiots!

!! We can be Digg-ed by clicking here. !!

ATTENTION: Work on the newest open directory/ search engine/ social network hybrid has begun.Any Questions?

This is the only blog where low-calcium is ok!

Welcome to the humble blog for Idiots, its almost like Web 2.1 for Dummies. EXCEPT its more blunt and half as much sodium.

I own various web-sites here and there and I'll be bloging about the extraneous task of making them from not-so-great to fantastic (in 3 easy years.) Enjoy!

ELGG - The worlds ugliest Open Social Network

Okay, I was opening a Social Network site, and decided to use ELGG. Its open source and a lot of people are using it for production. So I thought why not use it.

Here are good reasons not to use the default installation:
  • The CSS and Layout is disgusting to say the least.
  • The code barely validates.
  • You have this odd tool bar on top of everything.
  • All the links are on-top of each other.
Here is what I had to do to make my site look New and Improved!
  • I created a layout that works for 1024*768 and above.
  • It still doesn't validate but I added the fixes necessary for the profile to work on all browsers.
  • Got some plug-ins like Vanilla forums.
Here is how easy the installation went:
Not easy at all, first I had to go though the installation wizard which only worked to create the database. A secondary script ran when you first viewed the site which also creates the same database. Why the code ran twice I'll never know!
The mod rewrite only works on profiles, I had to improve it with further rewrites and still need a re-write for the blog.
SEO is completely not included with the installation, I had to write lines of code to make my profile site easier for goggle.
Another problem is my site requires a redirect, which means Google will never see my site, ever.
Lastly it was a pain, but so far I have been having good results with code. Still lack the people lol!

I'm still wondering what I could do that won't cost me an Arm and a Leg. I feel like diamond shopping.

Thats not a bad suggestion actually Simon.

Once you have a vbulletin forum up and running you can purchase something called vBSEO which sorts out all of the URL rewriting for the forums, blogs, profiles and you can even supply rule-sets which will extend to any mod you may write or install.

Once you've installed vBSEO, you just need to do some on-page optimising - pretty good stuff really and a massive time-saver.
