Internet & Isolation of Society

Posted February 8th, 2008 at 04:06 AM by welshstew
During my university years (2000) I started to research a paper around the internet and its impact on society.

My basic premise was that although the internet is a global tool, that will encourage cross border collaboration, co-operation and integration / understanding of different cultures, it will also see the demise of social skills. The interaction between people on a face-to-face level will suffer, as all we know is how to txt tlk. lol.

Unfortunately, this thesis required too much research for the time I had, and as such I produced a paper on internet banking & security (clicks vs bricks – still love that title ).

However, with the advent of social networking sites, facebook et al, this has been at the back of my head for some time, and I’m thinking of finishing my paper on this.

What do you think? Are these sites and the internet in general increasing our social skills, or impairing them?

(and yes, I am aware or the irony of using a internet forum to talk about this subject)

I think there are two clear sides to this argument

On one hand, you can say that people are losing social skills to the internet, and a lot of people say that the art of conversation is lost.

However, never before has it been easier to communicate, for example, on this forum there are people from the UK, india, greece, basically from all around the world.

the ball swings both ways, yes some people have lost the so called art of conversation, yet it has never been easier to "solicalise" with people all around the world.

Completely agree with Craig. It's like that advert for the mint card - the dumb and clever balance? 6 of One, Half a dozen of the other, that kind of thing.

We all know that some people have a difficult time having a conversation with people. Looks like instant messaging gives those that have a difficult time socialising in public a confident boost probably.
