Phorm approved for UK rollout

Posted September 17th, 2008 at 06:21 AM by welshstew
Controversial internet tracking system Phorm has now been approved for roll out to the UK by the Government. Development was recently put on hold whilst an investigation into the legality of the system was investigated.

Clarification from the development company has been provided, and this has apparently appeased the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform; the UK Government responsible for the investigation.

However, going forward it will need to develop along strict guidelines. One of these is the clear, upfront, unavoidable option to opt-in or opt-out of the service. Which means no more secret trails, like the one conducted by BT on its users.

I, for one, will opt-out of this service as I believe what I do on, in and around the net is part of my private life, and not to be scrutinized, analyzed and used to serve me more “relevant adverts”.
