Phorm approved for UK rollout

Controversial internet tracking system Phorm has now been approved for roll out to the UK by the Government. Development was recently put on hold whilst an investigation into the legality of the system was investigated.

Clarification from the development company has been provided, and this has apparently appeased the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform; the UK Government responsible for the investigation.

Web Standards Curriculum Launched

Today Opera has launched a new education system that aims to teach all you need to know about Web Standard based development - "a course designed to give anyone a solid grounding in web design/development, no matter who they are - it is completely free to use, accessible, and assumes no previous knowledge."

Yahoo makes semantic search shift

in order for websites to be successful they must rank highly for search engines, sometimes locally, sometimes globally, depending on the site.

there are a number of ways you can geo-target your website to a local country:
  • domain - TLDs often indicate where a site is located and will often rank higher in their corresponding local SE's
  • IP addresses - often a cause of contention, but google themselves have started that in the absesnce of a TLD they do look at IP addresses

Internet & Isolation of Society

During my university years (2000) I started to research a paper around the internet and its impact on society.

My basic premise was that although the internet is a global tool, that will encourage cross border collaboration, co-operation and integration / understanding of different cultures, it will also see the demise of social skills. The interaction between people on a face-to-face level will suffer, as all we know is how to txt tlk. lol.
