sending an e-mail by ASP

i've been reading the ASP articles, and to send an e-mail by CDONTS or whatever the other is, does the From field have to contain an e-mail of the same domain as the website that is sending it? For example, you can't send an e-mail from a free hosting service using a hotmail address?
