Smile Online bookstore

Hi everyone!

I am getting ready to build an online bookstore for a client and would appreciate any advice on the subject. One thing I am wondering off the top of my head is how to cross-sell or up-sell. That is, how can I put something like: «customers who bought this item also bought...». Thanks in advance!

Re: Online bookstore

You're doing this from scratch?

You must have a lot of time on your hands

What language will you be using? Which database?

Sounds like a fun prioject Moonlilly, are you able to provide some more information about what you are planning to build, what programming language you will be using etc, then we can help you some more.

Thanks for the replies And yes, I do have alot of time on my hands! LOL

I was thinking of fixing something with a shopping cart (OS Commerce, zen cart or something similar? Even if it's not free...) I had my consultation with her today, and she really wants a 'Chapters' or 'Amazon' style bookstore, with the same professional look and usability. I was hoping to be able to use MYSQL, PHP... She currently uses Simply Accounting to scan her items in using a barcode scanner. Is there a way to export that info into something usable? Or do I need to make another database totaly from scratch? We would like it to show the number of items left, and if they are out of stock, etc.

I'm sure I'll have lot's more questions as I go along, but that's enough for now Thanks in advance for all your help!

Re: Online bookstore

The best thing would be to setup something for here where she could store the barcode ... in a MySQL table of course ... then everything is online and available.

Re: Online bookstore

Yes, that sounds like a good plan indeed. But what if she wanted to sell items that she didn't necessarily have in stock? (She would order them from her supplier once she receives the order). She also wants to sell gifts and CDs btw.
