intelligent-studios.co.uk
You might remember me but if you don't i posted a while ago with a site www.mcwebdesign.co.nr and stirred up a load o fighting mainly from me. But neways i have a new design company and have taken on board the comments from before. I still have filler text on the front page at the moment until my clients write testimonials for me but here is the design:
http://www.intelligent-studios.co.uk
Oh and i do see how the name might seem a little ironic.

Re: New portfolio design.
ok, you must forget the surface of the website and get into your code.
problems:
no <head> section
description and keywords should be first thing
css on page (should be a separate file)
java script on page (should be a separate file)
table based layout
it looks ok, but the code is 0/10.
if you're serious about this (and you did say this is a company website), then ditch wysiwyg editors (specially macromedia) and get down and dirty with come code...

Re: New portfolio design.
Site looks nice...other than the google ads at the bottom need shifted over well atleast in ie.. as spinal said if your serious about5 this youll have to do a lot more with your code. Butt I dont completly agree with ditching dreamweaver. Although your code needs work dreamweaver saved you a ton of time on site. I would continue to use it just need to touch up the code after your done getting it to look the way you want as dreamweaver and other editors are definitly not perfect.

Re: New portfolio design.
Yes I have been working on the coding such as header tags and so forth. Sorted them just havent uploaded them yet. Also I was thinking about hiring people into the company and sharing profits with them. Ie hiring a coder and possibly another designer or just a coder. Do you think this would be good idea?

Re: New portfolio design.
The code is better but still not ideal, ie: CSS...
***
Instead of closing the BODY and HTML tags, you opened new ones, which completelly destroys the structure of your document. (just before the google ads).
***
All your pages have the same title, and they all seems to have the same keywords and description. Add SEO to your list of things to learn...
***
About hiring one or two more people into the company:
I don't know how much work you got going but it seems crazy.
1. You'll just complicate things by dividing small projects
2. Nobody will make enough money
***
Your homepage is: /, NOT /index. html
***
Allow me to introduce you to your new best friends:
http://www.silktide.com/tools/sitescore
http://www.totalvalidator.com/validator/ValidatorForm
http://validator.w3.org/
Get those to approve you and so will I...

Why get into bad habits? why spend so much time trying to work out where all the code is and tweaking it back and forth?
Just code it from scracth. You have total control, you learn more and ultimatelly you'll end up with a better website.

Re: New portfolio design.
I have sorted the body and head tags out. I am also doing work for someone at the moment for money and lessons in SEO. As for css coding. That is something I need to learn. I went through the learn css on www.w3schools.com and that was all easy enough, and i already knew most of it. But i still dont no how to code using css.
Oh and i never meant to type "like to" i meant "will teach me tableless coding"
49 errors - will set about sorting that tomorrow.

Re: New portfolio design.
Hi, can you centre your work? Some examples on home page and testimonials would be nice.

Re: New portfolio design.
Just keep it up mate, it's great that you're taking the advice on board and trying to better yourself. You've taken the right approach and soon enough all this code/ css stuff will come naturally to you...

Re: New portfolio design.
Hey man, I might have dropped a critique before about this site but I think it got lost in the down time.
The good. - I really like the overall look and layout of this site, it's not too dissimilar to something I might use on a site. I like the combination of green and black and the lime picture works well.
- Your navigation is clear and gives enough feedback.
- Information is easy to find and quick to load.
The bad. - The headings for your sections of a page are purely graphics. it should be real text on a repeating graphic background.
- No contact form on the contact page, just email addresses that will get swamped with spam.
- Google ads make a mess of the footer.
- Tables Based layout makes for overly bloated code. Your site would work perfectly well as a CSS based layout.
- 49 validation errors.
The verdict.

Re: New portfolio design.
Okay, not contact form on contact page because there is a get a quote form on every single page, my work is centred, the google ads will be remove when i pay for my hosting or find a better one. The heading have inner shadow on the end of them but that could be sorted by splitting each heading into 3 sections, i will look into that. No examples of testimonials because my client hasnt wrote one for me yet. Im also reading about css at the moment and will hopefully be able to use that instead, although it seems very fiddly.

Re: New portfolio design.
Okay i gave css coding a go. It has a number of errors which make it out of line and have white gaps where it shouldn't. If someone could take a look at the code and see whats wrong with it, i would be very grateful:
URL: www.intelligent-studios.co.uk/tableless.html
Also i put the css code into a txt file so you can view it easily to see any errors in it:

Yeah i just wasnt sure if you could view it online or not so did it to make sure. The coding needs work to get the css all lined up but i reckon its a start.

Re: New portfolio design.
For now sort out the <head> and <body> tags you have duplicates etc.
Code:
<body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('images/home_over.gif','images/templates_over.gif','images/contact_over.gif','images/about_over.gif')">
<script src="java2.js">
</script>
<script src="java1.js">
</script>
<HEAD> <BODY>

Re: New portfolio design.
Basically mikka, what you need to do is stop trying to run before you can walk... I was guilty of this in the beginning too so don't think I'm getting on at you...
Look at some nice clean code examples.
www.minutedesigns.com is my site.
You might not like the look or whatever but view the source. It's simple and clean and it validates.
Obviously there are other sites you can check out too one of my favoutrites at the moment is http://www.sercotransarctic.com/
Again. all nice valid standards compliant XHTML.
THis is what ou should be working towards. I'm not gonna kid you. It's a steep learning curve but 100% worth it.
