Bathroom website structure suggestions

Hi All

Just wondered; if you were browsing a bathroom website in order to view various pictures and products, which 'path' (level of categories) would you find easier to navigate?

1)
Code:
Bathrooms > [Modern] or [Traditional] > [Taps] or [Showers] or [Baths] etc.
2)
Code:
Bathrooms > [Taps] or [Showers] or [Baths] > Modern or Traditional (for each section)
Ok, subtle difference - but any preference (or better suggestions!) ?

I think two makes more sense to me and is easier, you select what you want earlier on, which is surely better?

Re: Bathroom website structure suggestions

I had a little think - here would be my take;

Most users will either be hunting / interested in either modern or traditional from the start. So giving them the option earlier on saves more clicking later (once they're in the modern section, there's no more need for getting interrupted with 'modern or traditional' at each stage).

Anyone agree / disagree? (Thanks for your response Jack )

Hmm when you put it like that I can see what you mean, they then only choose the type once during their entire visit.

I like that one now

Re: Bathroom website structure suggestions

why not have both / all?

if bathrooms is the home page why not have:
[Modern] [Traditional][Taps] [Showers] [Baths]

and the associated links beneath them in a drop down?

This way your user is only ever one click away from what he wants.

Re: Bathroom website structure suggestions

I see what you're saying Stew.

I might implement a 'common links' set (overall there's about 50 sections, which might be a bit overwhelming!), along with the modern / traditional links. How's that sound?

Re: Bathroom website structure suggestions

50 sections! Do they sell every single piece of furniture in existence?

Sadly not!

When I say 50, that's including the various 'alternatives' and options for each 'major' category

For example: taps - there's bath taps, basin taps, bath fillers, bath shower mixers, basin mixers, tall mixer taps, wall-mounted taps, floor-mounted taps, single-lever taps ...
