Java is a cross-platform programing language. To run Java you must have a Java Run Time software, which "translates" the Java code. JavaScript is a web based scripting language, and only requires a web browser.

They have never little common, except Java in their name, and that both were pioneers in Object Oriented Programming. Java was created by Sun and was just releasing when JavaScript was released, and was the hype in the programing field. Netscape, the creators of JavaScript, renamed their soon to be released scripting language to JavaScript as a marketing scheme to build hype around it. They were hoping that people would think that JavaScript was related to Java, and thus look into the language.

Good answer. You sound just like my JS teacher. Looking back, I guess their marketing scheme worked, because javascript is now the standard for client side web based code.
