Changing URL without refreshing page ?

Hi all, I am in the process of re-designing my site, it was originally designed as a full flash site however after reading much info about seo etc I have decided that I will design it as flash / php.

my question is, I want to keep the flash header and heard somewhere of a technique with javascript which can refresh only a certain part of the page, is it at all posible to send new url data to the url, but keep the header page loaded so it doesnt refresh with the rest of the data, hence keeping the animation in the header loaded rather than re-loading ?

Thanks,
Mark.

Yes. What you are talking about is using JavaScript and the DOM to re-write sections of the page.

You need to read up on Ajax. This is exactly the sort of thing it is designed to do.

I use it on my site a little. Here's a working example if you're interested:

Click on the images under "Recent Work". Oh, and I haven't tested this in IE yet. It's still not quite finished, but works in Safari and Firefox.

Ajax is very easy to learn if you understand JavaScript a little, but this tutorial is what got me started on it:

Re: Changing URL without refreshing page ?

cool yes this is exactly what i want to do, I am in the process of learning javascript now, didnt realise that it was actually very similar to actionscript which I am fairly competent with now so it shouldnt be a real struggle, I will submit my site for review once its all up and running hopefully with some of this implemented in the code.

Thanks for the helpful info,
Mark.
