Java will most likely have a stable future. One of the reasons is due to it's portablility. Although the "hype" around Java has died off a while ago there are still a lot of applications and websites that us it. Most of the time Java is now used on the web to interface with other applications and servers, for example an IRC Java applciation. One place that Java looks to have a strong future, is in the mobile phone industry, since a lot of mobile phones still use Java.
