Falling visits, but the same number of page views

Hi everybody.

I'm in charge of a fairly large and active website which earlier in the year recorded something like 15,000 visits a day. But in the past eight months or so that has gradually dropped down to 5,000 visits daily, although the page view stats have remained the same (or almost so).

On many relevant searches we're on page 1 of Google.

Has there been some sort of change in the way that people use the internet, or have browsers started to record their visits in different ways which could produce that drop in visits statistics. Or are we just losing visitors?

I know you can't answer in any detail since I myself haven't provided many details, but any thoughts?

Re: Falling visits, but the same number of page views

Perhaps at first there was a large surge of new visitors, for whom the majority quickly browsed your site (i.e. few page views).

As time went on, your visitor count decreased as fewer kept returning, but the large majority of these 'dedicated' viewers increased their browsing time on your site (increased page view pp), in effect balancing the page-view count.

Ok, sounds a bit far-fetched now - I'll just shut-up

Re: Falling visits, but the same number of page views

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I think you are right about the peak - there was something which drove visitors to our site in January (there's a large news and forum element to the site, and there was a huge story which broke in January and got us visitors).

However, the visitor stats didn't settle down to the same level that we had before January - the slide has now gone way below that (but, as I say, page views haven't plummeted).

I'd thought that the effect might be what you suggest - dedicated viewers hanging around on the site for longer. I'd just been hoping that there might be a different explanation which would make a better statistics story!

Hello

Says to me you need to do another promotion as if your hits and unique visitors are dropping means the content is not keeping the visitors. I weekly check my figures and plot the trends. If i have a drop i then check the site and see if i can improve the content.

Do a survey if you can on your current users see if this is a good gauge to see if your site meets the readers demands.

Hi,

You need to check your main page or landing page which you got most visits, and also optimize the competitors websites, and also check the links or they active or broken ?,
