geyids ... probably just using a fluid layout meaning they are using % to widths.

It depends on the project/sites. Some sites look better narrower others don't.

I've taken to using em and % recently. I'm gradually moving away from px as more and more users get bigger screens. Still not abandoned them completely though.

Well ems are basically a relative unit just like % but instead of being relative to the box it is in it is relative to the text size. So say you have a container div that is 66 characters wide, if you use ems it will always be 66 characters wide as it scales with the text. So if a user resizes their text, the box will resize and contain the text just as you intended. Its an excellent tool when it comes to typography but sometimes on the 'net its important to relinquish control to the user and that is where % comes in.
