Re: Free fonts?
Urban fonts have some nice ones (and a great site). However I'd encourage you to pay for your fonts. You don't have to pay Veer's prices to get excellent quality fonts. A lot of free fonts are very, very poor and require a lot of tweaking to get right.

Re: Free fonts?
I get most of the ones I use from http://www.dafont.com/. It then just takes a small amount of time to change them to how I want them to look.

Re: Free fonts?
I think that there are some great free-fonts knocking around and some very poor paid-for fonts but if you buy your fonts from a good font foundry they don't just work, they stand out. A font is a means of displaying text but it is also much more than that in my opinion. People obsess about the colours, the layout, graphic elements and people will pay for stock photography. I believe if people took a similar attitude towards typography then the quality would be so much higher. I also believe we should support budding typographers. I noticed a thread about 'should we work for free, or whatever yet people, from a similar field, are unwillling to offer the financial support that they demand. It can take years to perfect a font, which then may only sell for 30-40 dollars. I believe this sort of work should be rewarded. I understand if people have little money, professionally created fonts can be expensive but if you are being payed for what you are doing then I don't think there is any excuse for not buying high-quality fonts or at least donating something to the designer of your free font.
Head over to somewhere like Veer and tell me if you still think the majority of free fonts match up to their quality.
Pete.

Re: Free fonts?
I hear you, but I'm not interested in that position. I will use all the free fonts I want so that I keep my overhead down, which in turn keeps costs down for my clients.

Re: Free fonts?
I do understand people using free fonts as there are some good free ones and paid for ones can be expensive. They can be very expensive.

Re: Free fonts?
That is a fabulous font and you get 25 different faces with it but it is expensive, I agree.
I love this one though, it may not seem anything special but I've struggled to find a really good classic font, like this. I just bought it I like it so much.

Switching back to the paid photography sites.. that is similar to Getty Images. I just wouldn't pay their prices when I can find some that do the trick for just a little cost.
I don't mind buying good quality fonts but I usually won't pay more than $20-40. I did buy a complete package recently of over 200 fonts for around $200. But honestly the funnest ones are the free ones.
