Exclamation Web Design Magazine...Good/Bad Idea?

Hello web designers!

My name is Michael Wilson and I just would like to take a moment of your time to answer this question.

Would you subscribe and read a web design magazine if there was one out there??

I ask because I have been doing some research and there is really no print magazines out there for web designers. There is one called Website Magazine but is more focused on the marketing aspect of websites.

This year I plan on starting a magazine for web designers that will cover web design, graphic design, and web marketing all in each issue. It will include "How to's" and other various articles from web professionals around the country. This is a project in the making and have gone under some serious planning but before I go out and start publishing, I wanted to make sure I get readers.

Please forward your input, just a simple "yes" or "no" would be perfect. But an explaination of any ideas you have will be greatly honored.

Thanks for your time.

-Michael Wilson

no, because you've got competition.

Re: Web Design Magazine..Good/Bad Idea

Firstly, a good idea would be to not post the same question in 5 different forums, this is against the rules and guidelines that i am sure you read before making your first post...

As for the actually magazine, it could work out, some people prefer learning from paper that the internet.

To compete with the thousands of website blogs etc you would have to put in a LOT of hard work, make sure that you have a wide variety of interesting and original articles.

If the magazine was worth buying then and it provided something different then yes i would certainly buy it, but if it was basically the same as the thousands of online blogs etc then i would save my money.

Good luck to you in this, be sure to keep us updated of your progress in 1 post.

Michael,

what about .net magazine?? - http://www.netmag.co.uk/

or web designer magazine?? - http://www.webdesignermag.co.uk/

or if you like your reading online

digital web?? - http://www.digital-web.com/

or smashing magazine ?? - http://www.smashingmagazine.com/

This is without going to the local whsmith and flicking through the racks.

Unless you are in the industry, it will be very hard to compete with these guys as they have high readerships and great rackspace in the retailers. You also need to find a publisher and arrange distribution. A huge task.

However, it never hurts to give anything a go, and if you can get some very good articles going then I wish you all the luck in the world. Once you have decided upon a name then let me know and I'll keep an eye out for it.

I always read things that are related to my industry, so will probably buy it to see what it was like.

Re: Web Design Magazine...Good/Bad Idea?

Web designer magazine is poor imho.... i think all print magazines are pretty poor for the price you pay....

A magazine for £5 such as web designer isn't so good, the tuturials are few and lame... too many ads and interviews for my liking (there customer service is excellent though).

I don't look at the magazines they're too expensive... but i've seen magazines such as digital arts (photoshop magazine) it's good quality but like £12

Webzines are good... and i'm fond of the few available....

You'd be best setting up something in the style of a webzine and probably offer both a free version and a paid version.

Then if it took off look into a printed version...

Distribution would be the most difficult part for a printed magazine imho.
