Re: How to make my computer faster?
I'd just like to point out my version of vista completly buggered up, they still have the bootmgr issues from xp
The way the os is installed on the first drive and the bootmgr on the second drive, so you have to go into the bios and disable the first drive or boot from disc... however the only way it'd let me boot from disc is to disable my first two hard drives (hard drives not partitions)... then i could repair.... but if they're disabled no work can be done on them.
But oh no.... if theres no first drive vista can't accept that.... so yeah ~.~ i'm back on xp now, however in another thread someone mentioned ghost... that's what set this whole thing off =/
So i blame that more than vista.
I really liked vista aesthetically.... it was just too much of a system hog... i mean it was consumimg around 480mb of ram, when i was doing nothing... that's appauling.
Although it's purty... and going back to xp made me realised how much they'd advanced the computer syncing... and how more user friendly it is.
Anyway back on xp now (going to skin it like vista now mind... just need to find someone who's recreated a real start menu search, most of the skins just have dud ones).
They're going to stop distributing XP licenses later this year.
I think i'm going to skip vista... if only gaming was more widely supported for other platforms
.......aaaaand mini rant over. (phew!)

Re: How to make my computer faster?
I had problems, last night i took it to a computer guy and he did some work on it for me, he said it was working on my laptop flawlessly, i had enough memory,
i used to program called Ccleaner which saltedm8 said about, although i got this before he mentioned it. i used it to clear the registry problems, but he said using ccleaner to do the registry is not a good idea because it often gets mixed up and deletes the wrong things. which is what happened to mine, he found a fix or something he said. i had also been disabling things in msconfig, and he enabled some of them.
there is a program which searches through the msconfig and searches on the internet and tells you what they do and what they are, the program is called 'star-up inspector for windows'. its very handy.
He also did a few other things, and since then i have had NO problems, the computer seems to be running much faster, and its not crashing anymore. this proves that vista is not as buggy as you lot say it is. but for some reason the updates still have not been installed. well there are still loads that have not been successfully installed. to get vista secure and stuff we need to get more people testing it and not reverting back to XP.
if its such a memory hog, maybe your computer needs more memory. there is nothing wrong with vista. you people just need to get with the ages. help find the bugs.
UNLESS YOU PEOPLE CANNOT PROVIDE HARD EVIDENCE THAT XP IS BETTER THAN VISTA, then please do not make remarks like that. We can always give out own personal permission, but sometimes its not right. You people are saying that XP is the best because you have it.

Re: How to make my computer faster?
I'd much rather the OS use minimal resources and allow my apps to maximise the resources available.
In saying that my pc has aged terribly, probably why vista created so many problems.
But it's not the consumers job to debug software.
Microsoft as always release to early, there next project in the works 'vienna' should be release one 2010, they WILL release it in 2010 regardless of wether it's ready or not... it's the way they work.
Much like intel just downgrade there failed projects where as AMD will scrap the project and restart if it doesn't work out like they planned.
I think vista had some nice features.... but i can live without them for now.

Re: How to make my computer faster?
Sorry saltedm8 i apologise
it not our job no, but we have the option to help, no one wants an OS with bugs, so the report button is there if we want to provide them with feedback.

Re: How to make my computer faster?
This afternoon i went back to my parents house, took my laptop and mine was faster than my mums computer, she has XP. Nothing is perfect when it comes out.
I doubt MS will admit that its a total cockup, thats like me saying 'the tv im going to sell isnt that brilliant and wont work properly, so who wants to buy it.......'

Re: How to make my computer faster?
If it was faster than your mum's pc on XP, thats probably because hers is older!!!
But i'm happy with Vista, runs well on my AMDX2 5000+ with 3gig of ram.
I do have XP on dualboot, but only because Vista can't record from a LineIn - so i have audacity on it and that's it, except Firefox and Messenger.

Re: How to make my computer faster?
Lol...
I think vista's mergh... it's the most userfriendly windows os so far, and it looks great...
My only real beef with it (aside it being released to early and being a bit too buggy)
Is the fact that doing nothing on it consumes almost 600mb of ram, where as on xp it's just nudging over 250...
For a gamer that critical loss, and anyone using demanding software such as photoshop, ableton live, final cut, cinema 4d and so on, it's not going to prevent them from using it as such, just severely hinder productivety by slowing everything down.
I think for alot of things it's more than adaquete.... and with microsoft quickly grasping usability i'm quite looking forward to the next os in the pipeline...
Also most importantly, i think if you can afford the loss to system resources that vista takes... then it's worth having... if you just can't afford to lose those resources then you should back off.
I don't think vista's 'bad' as such, i just think it hogs resources some of us can't afford to lose just yet.

Another factor is XP is a lot and I mean a lot more secure because it's been tried and tested by many millions/billions of people, unlike Vista because it's new.
You shouldn't go slagging people off because they say "Vista is crap" because thats their opinion, your entitled to yours, same as they're entitled to theirs - its called a democracy.
Just my two cents. People, feel free to agree/disagree with me at your will!

Get a quad core and see if vista is a system hog!!! It runs like XP with a quadcore proccessor but i am still partiel to Xp to be honest

Re: How to make my computer faster?
Vista runs terrible on a single & duel core... it runs perfect on a quad core!! But the bugs are still very annoying!!
Here is a funny vista bug that makes you swear 'Fu____g Microsoft' around your comfy home:
'Windows explorer has stopped working'..
Bill gates my bottom, he does not even have the brains to make farm gates

Re: How to make my computer faster?
Good news then
Bill gates is slowly leaving microsoft to pursue philanthropy with his wife.
He's already handed his position over as chief software architect, and he'll be phasing out over the next few months... then you'll be rid of him (mostly, he'll still own the majority of the shares in MS from what i understand).
