Rip off domain names

I just got a bill from www.cheapnames.co.uk for the renewal of 2 domains. A .com and a .co.uk. The bills was for over £70, which is crazy when you consider they cost less than £20 tgether when I brought them 2 years ago.

I did some maths and worked out with my 23 domains I have with them it would cost me around £900 every 2 years to keep my domains. Crazy! My hosting bill is less than that!

Anyway I spoke to my host who has great support and they are just fantastic and they said they would transfer them for free (in or out) and it would cost £8 per domain including VAT every 2 years.

I logged into cheapnames to start the prcess only to find out that they charge £10 plus vat per domain to move it out, even though its a mostly automated process (especially for UK domains where you just type in the IPS tag).

So I worked out that I have to pay £270 just to not use their services anymore! Ripoff. I phoned up and they basicaly said tough - its all there in the terms.

Is there anyway I can move my dmoains for free that anyone knows of?

Re: Rip off domain names

Hiya Voodoochilli

The £10+VAT is what nominet charge to change a TAG, which is why we refused to join nominet too, Nominet are a stitch up, so your host isnt charging a fee for themselves to release the name if they are nominet registered.

There renewal price is totally nuts though, thats a bitch...

Your better off doing it through the host (If they ARE nominet registered) as they will have to do all the paperwork, whereas if you go direct to nominet, you have to do all the paperwork and the whole thing is a pain in the backside.

This is why we have our systems setup so that customers dont incur any fee at all to transfer out any names.

Make sure that the e-mail is actually from cheapnames.

Some time ago I got a mail asking me to pay for a series of my domain names. It turned out that it was an attempt at phishing. (I assume you know how to check it out yourself).

I've experienced that problem since i signed up, it's still a problem, i assumed it just me accidentaly double clicking the search.

It's been around since before iEntry took over, it's no biggy, would be nice if it was fixed tho *hint hint*
