Migrating a Web Address from one host to another

Hello -

I have a client with an existing Web site but she doesn't know who is currently hosting it and cannot get in touch with that person. She has been spending money on a periodic basis, but doesn't have any other details.

I have searched Whois.com to find additional contact information, but there was not any information that was useful.

My client is very much interested in switching to a different host and having me help her get set up. However, I am still a novice Web designer and thus don't know what I need to do to migrate her Web address to a new host...especially if I cannot contact the existing host.

My client claims to "own" the Web address, though I am not certain that she has anything to back up this claim. I would really hate for her to have to lose her Web address to move to a new and more reliable host.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Matthew

Does she have an offsite back-up? But I think it is not that hard to find who is hosting the website. You can trace route the IP address and then to check who owns the IP network. If you don't want to do this just sign up with any hosting provider and ask them to sort this out for you.

Re: Migrating a Web Address from one host to another

Is that all I need to do. I have created my client an entirely new site. I just want to ensure that was keep her web address the same. I am just unclear as to how I move the address from her current host to the new host... will my new host help to resolve if I know the IP address?

Thank you again!!!
