Smile Reputation points.... What are they?

Hi folks,
Um, what are reputation points? I mean, I know what they are, but how are they earned here and what are they for?
Just curious...
Also, how do we put in smilies without typing them in? (I like to click )

Re: brownie points

I was speaking to rob about this earlier.

If you click the reputation button above, then that person earns or loses them.

So good posts should earn reputation - bad ones a minus

Re: brownie points

As far as what you can do with them, nothing really (as far as I am aware). They're more for reputation - as in, you give good advice - you get reputation points. So obviously you can expect the advice given from someone with plenty of reputation points to be reasonably accurate/helpful.

That's my understanding anyway.

Also, emoticons/smilies - when you're in the wysiwyg editor (by clicking the reply button), you'll see a list of smilies/emoticons on the right, plus and option to view all of them. Clicking on the smilies/emoticons adds them to your reply.

Re: brownie points

Thanks sypher and Tim356,

I get the reputation points idea. I guess the original poster asking the question is the one who adds/subtracts the points, depending on whether or not they found the answers helpful or not.?

Hmmm...I just don`t see any list of clickable smilies on the right, let alone the option to see them all. Boohoo. You see, I would need an emoticon for that! On the right of the message box I see `logged in as ivyholly` with nothing underneath but blank space. Is this normal?

Re: brownie points

Are you using the 'quick reply' or are you actually pressing the 'Post Reply' button? As the quick reply doesn't have the list of smilies next to it, only the advanced editor mode does (when you press the 'post reply' button.)

Can we get a screen shot?

As for the reputation points - it's really anybody that found the post helpful/useless that can give/take away points. For example, if I thought your last post was useless, I could click the reputation button, then disapprove your post (not that I would do that)... To try it out, click the reputation button on this post and approve what I just posted (hehee - only kidding, not forcing you into giving me reputation points! )

Re: brownie points

Actually...

reputation Points can be used in an automated way for all sorts of things here like promotions (to moderator for instance) or automatically assigning a user to an alternative usergroup ... opening up a whole world of permission settings such as the storage capacity of PM folders, the color of you username.. (glowing, 3d even), access to additional forums, ability to post polls, etc, etc. Of course, none of this aspect is enabled, but I am giving some thought into some sort of rewards system.

Re: brownie points

Well, I think the reputation points idea is fun, with or without rewards. For example, if someone can fix my smilie problem, I`ll give them a point!

Yes, I`m using the post reply button, not the quick reply. And I`m embarassed to say, I don`t know how to make a screen shot. (need another emoticon for that!) Can you tell me how? Could the problem be at my pc?

Re: brownie points

Thanks sypher,

Can I just paste it directly here? Or do I need to make it a file first.

You need to make it a file first and then when you're posting a reply (not quick reply), you can upload the file using the 'manage attachments' option.

Re: Brownie points.... What are they?

I have just amended the reputation system because the points represented by each 'pip' were way too high.

Re: Brownie points.... What are they?

Yeah, there`s something not quite right about that, sypher...with all due respect to craig, of course! Look at the post count, for example...ah, what do I know- I may have started this thread, but I still don`t know how it works, lol!

Anyway, thanks for asking, sypher- I`m a mod (yeah, that`s right) at a music forum now. wOOt!
