newbie questions re:beta version

Hi, I have been taking a number of web design courses at our local college, (html, dreamweaver, digital image for web, etc). Now at work they have asked me to do some revisions to the existing website. I can make the changes that they have requested, but there are some gaps between my school training and real life.....

I have not yet been given the hosting info etc, so I don't have access to the original files yet. I am assuming that once I am given this info, I should be able to access the currently uploaded files and make a copy of them for myself to make changes to, then upload the new files to the host. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Re: newbie questions re:beta version

that is correct. I am a newbie too, taking courses and learning as much as I can, so someone else might have more detailed info, but you are right. Someone has to create a login and password for you, or let you use theirs. You should always have local files to back up everything that is on the web, and once you download files from the web, save the old versions and make copies to manipulate so that when you upload your modified versions via FTP to the web you can go back to the old ones if your changes have bugs. Good luck!
